Consumers becoming desensitized to gas price jumps, says price tracker

Yahoo News -- CALGARY - The co-founder of a popular gas price-tracking website says consumers are becoming increasingly desensitized to wild swings at the pump — like the 13-cent wallop Montrealers experienced earlier this week.
Gasbuddy.com's Jason Toews recalls Canadians being "on the edge of revolt" in 2005, when the damage wrought by Hurricane Katrina rippled north of the border and sent the national average to a then-record of $1.23 per litre.
"People were really upset by the high gas prices and they're talking about boycotting the oil companies and gas stations," he said.
"Ironically enough, it doesn't seem that expensive anymore — $1.23. That's kind of the new norm."
The national average for gasoline sat at $1.33 per litre on Thursday. Toews said he expects it to dip into the $1.20 per litre rang

Not everyone is desensitized. Mad, angry, yes, desensitized, I doubt it. I am not, that's for sure.

Maybe Canadians are fine with these high prices, which I doubt.

We are pissed off, very angry, and want a leader who actually cares about the middle class - NOT someone who pretends to care and does absolutely NOTHING. ("energy prices will necessarily skyrocket")

...unless Yahoo!News polled GasBuddy members!

Desensitized -- more like frustrated, pissed, and powerless. Seems as if EVERYTHING is falling to sh*t!

I feel the paid every time. This may date me, but I remember filling a 20 gallon tank for $10.00.

That is how the price moves up each year, the yo yo efect of gas price desensitized the gas buyer, to give the oil company more profit.

No. -- We are not 'desensitized' to gas price jumps --

That's an erroneous assumption!

Jason Toews does not speak for me, or anyone else here.
His contention is very subjective, whether referring to either Canadians or Americans.
I don't believe anyone is accepting of high gas prices.

Oil/gasoline is an international commodity in limited supply, and whose supply varies. It is not the government that should be blamed directly for price fluctuations, but for allowing oil majors to "create" spot shortages by taking refineries off-line to decrease supply, or by having shoddy maintenance procedures which cause breakdowns, fires, etc. which then force refineries off-line. If poor refinery maintenance practices were punished, then there would be less volatility on the supply side.

Similarly, if government was to limit speculation in the oil futures market, wild swings in pricing, especially on the high side, would be damped. If the sheep would wake up and target these regulatory shortcomings then better price stability would result. Nevertheless, if demand exceeds supply, prices will go up; this is how a free market works.

Those who complain about spending too much $$ for gas per month should buy smaller and lighter vehicles and drive less. The Ford F-150 is the best selling vehicle in the U.S. - wtf!? Similarly, SUVs pollute the landscape, both literally and figuratively -these are stupid vehicles (for most people) with compromised handling due to a higher center of gravity and excess mass. Citizens *should* be buying station wagons instead of pig-wagons. Stupid behavior is always a more costly option. Sorry, no sympathy here.

I'm with driveonby1 on this. Between the high crude prices and our absolute lack of mass transit (read: our unwillingness to pay for it, either via taxes or by fares) we're stuck with our cars. We can only cut down on our driving so much, and not every lifestyle is amenable to a Nissan Leaf or a Prius (Or even a vehicle, for that matter).

So yeah...demoralized, not desensitized.

“‘Everything's hinging on this geopolitical situation,’ he said. ‘So I think the speculators are just going to go a little bit nutso trying to figure that out.’"

Driving speculators nuts is good fun indeed but the price for that fun is higher prices.
