Toyota Prius Escapes Niche to Surge Into Global Top Three

Bloomberg -- Prius, a niche oddity when it went on sale 15 years ago, jumped to the world’s third best-selling car line in the first quarter as U.S. demand and incentives in Japan turned the hybrid into a mainstream hit.

Prius sales more than doubled as Toyota extended the name to a four-model “family” of vehicles at the same time that rebates and tax breaks in Japan are saving buyers the equivalent of $2,500 or more. In the quarter, sales soared to 247,230, trailing only Toyota’s Corolla, at 300,800, and Ford Motor Co. (F)’s 277,000 Focus sales.

A curious thought... What if VW started making a "new beetle hybrid diesel"? Would that be a car people purchase to impress people or what.

Buy American made! Buy a Honda.

15 years is a long, long time to get this far. Most companies without deep pockets would have been in bankruptcy years ago.

More hype than results. And definitely a longer than reasonable payback for the up charge.

To all the people who say "the Prius is ugly":
I thought the knock on hybrid technology was it was more expensive.

If you want good looking, get an Infinity hybrid or a Tesla.

If you commute more than 40miles to work, with mostly highway driving, you would be better off with the Honda civic hybrid.

The Prius is designed to get better MPG in stop and go traffic.
It has an electric engine, with a gas assist.

The Honda is designed to get better MPG on longer, flatter drives.
It has an gas engine, with an electric assist.

Until a hybrid will charge it self with out using any gas or plugging it in, than its Not worth all the money it cost.

Own a Prius V and loving it. Great on fuel, very good performance and handling. Ride is typical of most small cars. It also seems prone to wind sheer at times. Over all I believe it to be worth the bucks.
