Merc's are world renowned for the longevity. Gas or diesel, doesn't matter, so long as it is well maintained and cared for. In Germany, over 50% of the taxi cabs are M-B diesels. Most of them last for over 500,000 km before their owners replace them.

With all of the parts and help available, the MB are no more expensive to maintain than the American cars... expect that they actually last a lot longer!

I agree. The '87 300 TD wagon has been a workhorse for MB, and I can't believe they stopped bringing them over here after that.

The "TE" will not run forever and it will cost you a fortune to get it repaired. If you are a DIY guy you will likly not be able to work on it. Find yourself a 1980-85 "TD" and it will likly run a long time without major expense and you can work on it yourself. If you must have the "TE" it is way overpriced for the mileage. Hard to give a gasser away with 200+ miles.

The 4-MATIC? This is the 4-wheel drive model. I would be careful. If it is well-maintained there are still a few things to be aware of. The transmission is not bullet-proof like the engine. At this mileage you could start to have some issues. Also, the front of the engine has a tendancy to have an oil leak at the head gasket at the #1 cylinder. This is not a major problem, but it is just something you should check. The rear has a self-leveling load adjustment shock system--not just shock absorbers. Drive it and make sure the rear is not extra "bouncy." These are good wagons. I have owned two of them. For more information and answers you can check out www.mbca.org, or www.benzworld.org. Also run a "CARFAX" report if you want to check for wrecks or a salvage title. One report is $15 but could be worth it. Offer $3,000 and plan to spend $1,200 on the transmission at some point.
